As many of you know, Dennis and I are expecting our first child. I find this to be such an exciting, albeit sometimes terrifying time! From changing emotions to changing sizes pregnancy is truly amazing. I’m 36 weeks now and fortunately baby and I are very healthy. Aside from the expected aches and fatigue I’m feeling great.
As any expectant mom knows, the two top questions are when are you due and what are you having? I’m due February 18th and we have decided to be surprised. Can you believe it two nosy reporters don’t want to know? I just think it’s one of the only great surprises left in life. Most people think I’m carrying like a boy, but lately I have been having feelings it’s a girl.
My mother is Hungarian and claims she has special intuitive powers, but even she is stumped.
Speaking of mothers, it’s amazing how different pre-natal care was for them. When my mother had me she only gained 17 pounds, smoked, drank a glass of wine every now and then and her Doctor approved. Women of her generation look at you with fear and bite their tounges when they hear today we are supposed to gain between 25 to 35 pounds at least! In addition to giving up any alcohol, I have also sworn of sushi, all of my favorite cheeses like feta and goat (apparently these can cause listeria poisoning?) and I try to be happy when I see the needle on the scale move up every week. At only 5 foot three I think I will tip over soon! I feel like I need a forklift to roll me over at night. I figure as long as Dennis still weighs more than me I’m doing OK! For those who are wondering, I guess I can tell you I’ve gained 31 pounds so far with about three and half weeks to go. My Doctor is happy, my jeans are being pushed farther back in the closet!
I’ve read every pregnancy book out there and I’m now moving on to What to Expect in the First Year. I was raised as an only child. Although, I have always had a deep love for children I haven’t changed a diaper since I babysat in high school! I know I have a lot to learn, but the Pediatrician in my child-birth class told all of us the first two weeks of life are like middle school, they don’t count. I will have some great mothers to call on for advice, from my own to Denise D’Ascenzo, Susan Raff and both of my bosses who are managing careers and young children. I will be taking maternity leave and if I can swing typing while breast-feeding I will try to keep you all updated on my adventures as a new mother.
I also want to thank all of our viewers who have sent in such amazing hand-made gifts. From crocheted blankets to knitted booties Baby House will be the best dressed kid around!
If you want to read about our quest to find the perfect baby name log onto Dennis’s blog.
The Wall Street Journal ran an interesting article a few weeks ago about alcohol during pregnancy. It said that women in France are very likely to drink wine occasionally during pregnancy, but would never dream of eating raw vegetables for fear of bacterial poisoning. When I think of all the salads I ate, and all the wine I passed on…
Good luck Kara & Dennis, and practice that relaxational breathing. It may or may not help during delivery, but it’s really helpful during the Terrible Twos!
Our secret to a Happy Baby is M&M’s!!! We heard that chocolate helps with having a happy baby! I can say that our son is going to be 3 in April & is the GREATEST & most HAPPY kid! We told this to one of my cousins who was pregnant & she believes it now too. Her son was sick but she said that you could never tell… We have another cousin who is pregnant now & have pass this knowledge on… She says that its worth a try.
BEST of Luck to you & Dennis!
During all my pregnancies I missed coffee more than wine. My sweet Doctor finally allowed me a cup a day, which helped move things along, so to speak. Those of you who have had to take iron suppliments know what I am talking about.
Naming babies is a responsibility I despised. Should the name be interesting and unusual or ordinary? What pressure to know that the moniker you attach to your child follows them on through their lives. In the end, we opted for simple and easy to spell and pronounce. One of our is a Kara!
Best of luck to you both. I’m sure you will be awesome parents.
Well, Kara, you look wonderful in your 36th week. I just want to wish you and Dennis well. I love it when the two of you anchor the news. You are a first class news team. Lucky the baby that has you for parents! Good luck on choosing names. We opted for normal, everyday names that would last into adulthood. Again, good luck, and be happy!
Wow, what a special time for you. I’m sure you’ll be a fantastic mom, you’re doing things to reduce risks and I think that’s great. Congratulations!!
Kara and Dennis, congratulations on your upcoming and so exciting event. Kara, you look just beautiful, and I hope you do have the baby on February 18, that’s my birthday also. It’s such a wonderful time in your life, enjoy it. Ann
Hi Kara, I hope you are considering having an epidural. It will make your labor much more enjoyable for you and Dennis. Just a word of advice, when the doctor tells you it is time to push, PUSH as hard as you can even though it hurts(burning sensation). The harder you push, the faster your little one will be in your arms. This is such an emotional time in every parents’ life. you will NEVER forget it! God Bless you all.
Kara, I smiled when I read your blog, all of what you are feeling I remember feeling oh so well. My first child is now, 22 years old. I am the proud mom of two daughters my youngest is 18. I carried each of them very differently. It was funny because, the whole time with my second daughter I felt she was a boy. On my way into the hospital to have her by c-section I looked at my husband and said, get ready to call this one Kristen, I know this baby is a girl.He laughed and said, oh ok. I was right. As far as names, that is a tough one. I not only had to get the names past my husband, but also my mother. Like she really had a choice. You have a short last name so that will make it easier. We happen to have a long italian last name.
I wish you, Dennis and baby House all the best. I am sure with you and Dennis as he/she’s parents they will flourish. Good luck and looking forward to the baby’s arrival and seeing the pics.
hey kara good afternoon you have a great blog here, congrats on your new baby. i realy watching you on wfsb always very informative. i do researching about the sasquatch-bigfoot pheanomena. thanks bill green bristol.
Kara and Dennis-
You guys are both talented journalists and I, like so many in Connecticut, am so thrilled for you. I watch you all the time and I am such a big fan of all of your work. I wish you all the best with the baby. My name suggestions- Jacob, Noah, Aidan, Taylor, Nicholas, Ryan, or Julian for a boy; and for a girl Leah, Alexandra, Emily, Kayla, or Elizabeth. I hope you post pictures of all of you once the baby arrives.
Well Kara best wishes to you and Dennis. I don’t have any children. Although I work in a child care center and melt every time I walk into that infant room. Yes even when they CRY
You look wonderful!
Kara,
You look great even for being so far along! Congratulations! All of the happiness in the world to you and Dennis.
Kara, you look wonderful and Dennis seems so excited too.I enjoy watching both of you on Channel 3 and pray you have a safe delivery and healthy normal baby.I am predicitng a girl but know either is so welcome. The baby will add dimension to your lives. Our prayers are with you.
I knew you were pregnant even before it finally broke in the news! Let’s just say I have this sixth sense about those things ever since I became pregnant with my now 15 month old son! I also think you are having a girl.. my little hunch!
Anyways, I want you to know that being a mom is the absolute BEST and most rewarding experience. I am a teacher who was very dedicated to her career, like you are, then when I had my son all that changed. Life is so much more meaningful. My advice to you is that your baby will always be your greatest source of frustration and the greatest source of pride all rolled into one. Enjoy the ride, you three… there are no words to describe it. PS Labor pain is all relative- don’t listen to those horror stories. For me, it was a beautiful experience (no drugs!) and coming from a wuss who can’t stand pain- that speaks volumes!
Hi Kara and Dennis,
I’m happy to hear that you are waiting until the birth of your child to see whom he or she will be… I carried two sets of twins in 2 1/2 years and waited both times to see the little souls and precious faces that would join our family..
Best of Luck to you both – first time parenthood is a blessing worth waiting for!
Hurray for for not knowing the sex of the child until it’s birth. It truly is magical.
Don’t forget to post some pics !
If it is a boy you should name it Ron, and if a girl veronica, and Ronnie for short.
Helena what a beautiful name!
I just have one comment. If your going to breastfeed stick to it the hard part in the beginning is worth it in the end.I had a really rough time with my son for the first COUPLE of months, but stuck to my guns of wanting to give him what was best for him.He will be 10 months in about 2 weeks and he hasn’t been sick a day aside from shot fevers and we have an unbelievable bond.Worth every minute!
Both of my girls were adopted so I didn’t give birth. My daughters are pregnant with my 4 and 5th grandsons (yes this time they opted to know-but not with the first three!) I was present when the first three boys were born so vicariously got to go through the birth process. My nephew is Videotographer Eric B. and although I try to pick his brain about Connecticut’s favorite anchor team he is very close mouthed. I wish you three joy and love. May all your problems be little ones!
Kara and Dennis,
It’s June 5th and I just saw that there are updated pictures of Helena on the WFSB site .. I looked through the slideshow and the new pictures are ADORABLE! I’ve been in CT for 10 years and WFSB is my favorite channel for news, especially the morning crew! The picture of Helena with the HUUUUUGE smile absolutely made me smile, and I just wanted to say you have a beautiful baby, a beautiful family, and thank you for sharing!
Monique Allaire, another mom in Connecticut
Kara, I just want to tell you that a couple of weeks ago I saw a young girl on the news w/ beautiful eyes, face & smile. I wondered who it was. Then I realized it was YOU with your hair pulled back & off your face, & lovely tho you are, you looked so young & fresh faced w/ your hair this way ! You should wear this hairstyle more often. It’s adorable.
